Y’all! Y’all! Yaaaaaaaaa’ll! Queen of the South is officially back!
The series is an adaptation of the successful miniseries La Reina del Sur, which I watched from start to finish two years ago. I loved the telenovela, so I knew right off the bat that I wanted to watch Queen of the South the minute I heard that it was in the works.
Starring Alice Braga (“I Am Legend”) as Teresa, the original drama series is based on the global best-selling novel “La Reina Del Sur,” by internationally-acclaimed author Arturo Pérez-Reverte.
Queen of the South tells the powerful story of Teresa Mendoza, a woman who is forced to run and seek refuge in America after her drug-dealing boyfriend is unexpectedly murdered in Mexico. In the process, she teams up with an unlikely figure from her past to bring down the leader of the very drug trafficking ring that has her on the run.
I decided to have a mini watch party with the fiancé, his cousins, and my pup! Even El Chapo (my pup) loves the show! And if you have or have had a 1 year and 5-month-old pup, then you know how hard it is to keep them still. LOL But, he stays still and watches all the episodes of Queen of the South with me. So, I guess you can say it’s OUR summer obsession. He is also hoping to hear his name sometime during the second season. Haha
And, OH YES, this is so much more that your typical narco drama!! As many of you know, I am a civil engineer by trade. And I love stories that show how a woman can overcome all obstacles and take over in a male-dominated industry. Camila and Teresa are able to break through social and economic barriers despite being seen as poor and weak. Camila and Teresa are such BOSS BABES! Their characters inspire me and make me feel invincible.
Queen of the South also stars Veronica Falcón (“Besos de Azúcar”) as Camila Vargas, Justina Machado (“Six Feet Under”) as Brenda Parra, Peter Gadiot (“Tut”) as James Valdez, Hemky Madera (“Weeds”) as Pote Galvez and Gerardo Taracena (“Apocalypto”) as Cesar “Batman” Guemes. Guest stars include Joaquim de Almeida (“Our Brand is Crisis”), Jon Ecker (“Narcos”) and James Martinez (“Breaking Bad”).
Season 2 of Queen of the South will shift its focus from highlighting Teresa’s survival instincts to showcasing her growth in the cartel underworld. Viewers will get to see Teresa come into her own as she starts to recognize her power and potential. As Teresa learns what it takes to become the Queenpin however, she slowly realizes that ambition comes with a heavy price. Loyalties are tested, love becomes a vulnerability and moral compromises have to be made. Critical to Teresa’s rise will be Camila Vargas, serving as both a mentor and a formidable foe standing in her way as she struggles to reach the throne. By the end of the season, viewers will come to recognize that “there can only be one queen.”
And I am sooooooo excited to see Rafael Amaya on this season of Queen of the South! The actor will return to thriller-drama series as Aurelio Casillas, a drug lord who seeks power and respect as he avoids the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Mexican authorities.
I am so, so, so excited for the second season of Queen of the South and can’t wait to hear what you all think of the show!!
