I started The Nueva Latina in April 2015. I had been blogging for almost 5 years at that time on a Blogger blog called Confessions of a Serial Dater. Yes, I admit, I could not hold on to a stable relationship for more than 6 months at the time. But…it WAAAS college and I can say that I had a great time. Haha.
When I met the now husband in the spring of 2012, everything changed. I was no longer a “serial dater”. I no longer had the same stories and experiences I had when I was dating. I started to write less and the passion for what I was writing about diminished greatly.
I have always wanted to be a writer. Growing up I would seek solace in the many books and stories about the nerdy girl at school that would go through an incredible story and not have to change who she was to fit in after all. I lived at the public library in my small town. I devoured book after book. It’s funny, though, now looking back. The heroine in the books I would read would never be described to look like me. They never said if she was Mexican or Latinx or anything else of color. But, somehow I still saw the story in my head the way I wanted to see it.
It wasn’t until I left my small town to go to college that I realized that there weren’t many stories based on MY experience or OUR experiences as Mexican American girls, Latinxs, and women of color. When I knew that Confessions of a Serial Dater was no longer what I knew or what I wanted to write about, I decided to start writing what I knew. I decided to start writing MY story. OUR stories.
I admit that I lost my way a bit there. Haha. It’s hard to not want to take all the money being offered to bloggers from here and there to promote everything from face cream to razors made for women. But, lately, I have realized that I need to go back to the whole reason I started The Nueva Latina in the first place.
The Nueva Latina is an online platform and community for every Nueva Latina. A lifestyle blog where I write about the experiences of a new generation of Latinas in life, food, travel, relationships, career, and everything in between. Help me to share our stories! I am looking to interview and feature women of all backgrounds and ethnicities who identify as Nueva Latinas. Email anali.martinez@thenuevalatina.com for more info.
Welcome back to The Nueva Latina y’all!
I look forward to sharing my stories and our stories. Let’s take back the narrative of our experience together.
Stay in love,
